How to import a SHO from US to Canada

To import you have to contact manufacturer (Ford) with the VIN # and ask them to send a copy of any of the outstanding Safety Recalls (I had to do subframe bolts and rotors). Seller (= exporter) must submit US export documentation to US Customs at least 72 hours (=3 days) prior to the time show up at the US/Canadian border. The required documentation is original proof of ownership (which in most cases is original certificate of title). This kinda sucks since you first go check out the car, then wait around a few days until US customs gets paper mill going. See http://www.cbp.gov for more details if car has salvage title etc.

At the canadian border you pay GST to customs. There is no duty as long as car is manufactured in the US. Then there is around $182 to the Registrar of Imported vehicles. Tom had a travel permit from PA. to drive the car and a letter of coverage from his insurance company. They told him that it "really wasn't valid" but that the police never bothered you. Who would know anyway?

The vehicle will have to be inspected by an agent for the Registrar. In Newmarket it was Canadian Tire and their responsibility is to make sure that the vehicle basically passes a visual that it is roadworthy and meets Canadian Standards for that year. You will have to install daytime lights for any car produced after Nov./89. Bumpers are another general concern when importing, but its a non issue with the SHO - it complies as is. Then there is Km/h versus miles/h. That is not a concern either. The SHO has both present on the odometer. With your completed Safety Recall info, Registrar's form, E Test and motor vehicle inspection you can change the ownership.
The whole process is troublesome with nobody really knowing in what order to do things, but if you just go with the flow it can be done. (Thanks to Tom L./Herman)
